Supermarket vs. Premium Fuel

One of the most common questions UK drivers ask is: "Is supermarket fuel worse for my car?"

The Base Fuel: All petrol and diesel sold in the UK must meet the same British Standard (BS EN 228 for petrol, BS EN 590 for diesel). The base fuel often comes from the exact same refineries.

The Additives: Premium brands like Shell and BP add proprietary cleaning agents and performance additives to their fuel (e.g., V-Power). Supermarkets (Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's) generally use fewer additives to keep costs low, which is why they are often cheaper at the pump.

Which brand is cheapest?

Historically, Asda and Costco (membership required) lead the market on price. Other supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's usually follow closely behind, often 3-5p per litre cheaper than branded forecourts.

E10 is the standard grade (95 octane) containing up to 10% renewable ethanol. E5 is "Super Unleaded" (97+ octane) with only 5% ethanol, recommended for high-performance vehicles or classic cars. Brands like Shell (V-Power) and BP (Ultimate) specialize in E5.
