ULEZ & Clean Air Zones What is ULEZ

What does ULEZ compliant mean?

ULEZ compliant means your vehicle meets the minimum Euro emission standards required to drive inside a Ultra Low Emission Zone without paying a daily charge. For most private cars, that means Euro 4 for petrol or Euro 6 for diesel.

What the Emission Standards Actually Mean

Euro standards measure pollutants: Euro emission standards set legal limits on harmful exhaust pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. Each successive Euro standard (1 through 6) is stricter than the last. 4
Petrol cars: Euro 4 or above: Petrol cars first registered after January 2006 generally meet Euro 4 and are ULEZ compliant in London. Most petrol cars built from 2001 onwards are also likely to comply. 2
Diesel cars: Euro 6 or above: Diesel cars must meet the stricter Euro 6 standard to be ULEZ compliant. This typically means vehicles first registered after September 2015. 2
Motorcycles and mopeds: Motorcycles and mopeds must meet Euro 3, which generally applies to vehicles registered after July 2007. 2

What Happens if Your Vehicle is Not Compliant

Daily charge in London: Non-compliant vehicles driving inside the London ULEZ must pay a £12.50 daily charge. The zone covers all of Greater London, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2
Other UK Clean Air Zones: Cities including Birmingham, Bath, and Bristol operate their own Clean Air Zones with separate charges and compliance thresholds. The national framework sets the standards, but each local authority sets its own fees. 5
Penalties for non-payment: Driving in a ULEZ or CAZ without paying the charge, if non-compliant, can result in a Penalty Charge Notice. In London this is currently £160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days. 2

How to Check If Your Vehicle is Compliant

Use TfL's free vehicle checker: TfL provides a free online tool where you enter your number plate to instantly find out whether your vehicle is ULEZ compliant. It covers all vehicles registered in the UK. 3
Check your V5C logbook: Your V5C registration document lists your vehicle's Euro emission standard. If it is not shown, the registration year gives a strong indication of which Euro standard applies. 4
Year of registration is a guide, not a guarantee: Registration year is a reliable indicator but not definitive — some older vehicles were certified to a higher standard than their contemporaries. Always use the official checker to confirm. 3

ULEZ, Fuel Costs, and the Bigger Picture

Older non-compliant vehicles often use more fuel: Vehicles that fail ULEZ standards tend to be older and less fuel-efficient, meaning they cost more to run at the pump as well as incurring daily charges.
Compare fuel prices to offset running costs: If you drive a compliant vehicle regularly into a ULEZ area, finding the cheapest nearby fuel station helps reduce your overall motoring costs. CheckFuelPrices shows live prices updated every 30 minutes at stations across the UK. 1
