Yes, you can safely mix premium diesel with normal diesel — there is no risk of engine damage. Both types meet the same UK fuel quality standard (BS EN 590), so they are fully compatible in any diesel vehicle.

Why Mixing Is Safe

Same base standard: All diesel sold in the UK must conform to BS EN 590 regardless of grade. Premium and standard diesel share the same base fuel; the difference lies in the additive package, not the fundamental chemistry. 2
Compatible additives: Premium diesel additives — typically detergents, cetane boosters, and lubricity improvers — are designed to blend harmlessly with standard diesel. There is no chemical reaction that could harm your engine or fuel system.

What Changes When You Mix

Diluted additive benefit: The performance advantage of premium diesel — cleaner injectors, slightly improved combustion — is proportionally diluted when mixed with standard diesel. A half-and-half tank gives roughly half the additive benefit.
No cetane rating problem: Cetane rating (diesel's equivalent of octane in petrol) will sit between the two grades when mixed. For everyday driving, this has no meaningful effect on performance or fuel economy. 2
Cost still rises: Premium diesel typically costs 10–20p per litre more than standard diesel. Mixing means paying a blended price for a proportionally blended benefit. 1

When You Might Mix in Practice

Running low on a motorway: If you need to top up urgently and only premium diesel is available, adding it to a tank of standard diesel is perfectly fine. The reverse is equally safe.
Gradual transition: Some drivers switch to premium diesel periodically for injector cleaning. Mixing during the transition does not reduce effectiveness significantly over a full tank.
